The Sound

The fundamental of a bowl like a thick-rimmed, Lingam will hold at near-constant volume for an extended window after the bowl is stuck. This is because of the bowl's rim mass and wall thickness working together to slow energy dissipation through the bronze.

Less dampening of the vibration means the vibrations sustains, on and on. The longer a bowl sustains, the more cycles of entrainment our brainwaves are exposed to.

The Bowl

This is a lingam bowl, characterized by the the raised dome at the center of the bowl floor.

While rich in symbology, the raised dome is functional. When the bowl vibrates, its walls flex and move in radiating wave patterns. The lingam sits at the center of all that motion and doesn't move.

It's a fixed anchor point, and because the vibrational energy has to organize itself around that anchor rather than spreading freely across a flat floor, it concentrates into specific patterns that bring the upper voices out more strongly.

This is why lingam bowls tend to carry richer, more layered overtones. 

In Hindu cosmology the lingam represents the creative axis of Shiva, the point around which energy organizes. The acoustic reality and the symbolism are, unusually, the same thing.

The thick rim is visible and has a direct mechanical purpose. 

The rim is where the fundamental vibrational mode reaches maximum displacement, and adding mass there means more stored energy per vibration cycle.

That stored energy has to go somewhere, and it goes into sustain.
